Today we boated to Marsh Harbour, which is on Abaco Island. This is the third largest city in the Abacos.

To get to Marsh Harbour we had to go out into the Atlantic Ocean for a short period because the more protected waters of the Sea of Abaco, were too shallow for a stretch of miles.

To get to the Atlantic Ocean you have to go through a fairly narrow and tumultuous channel of water. We waited for a “weather window” to go through the channel but even with calmer weather, we faced 5-6 foot waves. Once we went through the channel we continued to face confused seas and  at one time the boat was pushed sideways in a trough. Kevin and the boat handled it well but it was kind of frightening seeing a wall of water at the side of the boat.

Marsh Harbour was filled with tons of boats at anchor or at moorings. The upcoming few days are supposed to be very windy and perhaps rainy. Lots of boats were looking for shelter.

We felt fortunate we had a slip at the marina. This Island also had power outages throughout our stay.

Marsh Harbour is not a pretty a town. Granted it does have lots of places to provision and get boat parts, and other items you can’t find on the other islands but instead of a quaint town it is a jumble of little shopping strips. We did find a great bakery “DA Best Bakery” and visited it a few times during our stay. They had great bread, meat pies, donuts and our new favorite dessert “Bahamian Guava Duff”. Biking around the area is also a little hazardous because of twisty blind curves and narrow, busy streets. We are both still getting used to riding on the left and looking the right way for oncoming traffic when you enter a roadJ

After getting more provisions, we were happy to leave this town.
