A new, yet old, adventure today. Locks! We left New Baltimore at 8 and proceeded to the Erie Canal. We have been having charting software difficulties lately and we’re using a work around to chart our course. It did the trick but we had to be super diligent looking at the chart to make sure we had enough water and avoiding hazards. We think the software just doesn’t like locks. We’ll see how it acts when we get past the locks and are out in Lake Ontario.

I was a little anxious about locking through because it’s been 5 years since we’ve gone through locks. The captain however, was cool as a cucumber. Everything came back as we traversed the first lock and I was much more relaxed. We are going through 90+ locks on this trip so I guess it will be old hat by the time we are through. There was a new twist at the few of the locks… canoes and kayaks! I don’t know how safe I’d feel if I was in one of those boats but they seemed to do OK.

After leaving lock 6, we found a nice anchorage in back of two islands and spent a good part of the afternoon planning our trip into Canada and making marina reservations.
